Cycling boosted weight loss and mental health

Illness, anxiety and stress led to Lois’ weight creeping up, and her happiness disappearing - until she hopped on her bike…

When Lois’ little boy was struck by leukaemia, her world span out of control. The worry, fear and many unknowns left her reeling, as she tried to see her toddler son through treatment.

Her anxiety soared, her self care went out of the window - as it would for almost any parent whose child was facing such a harrowing and difficult time - and before long, Lois had gained weight and felt fatigued too.

All the exercise she’d once done for fun went to the wall and she no longer had time to truly take care of herself. She ended up joining Slimming World, hoping to eat better with their food optimising plan. It worked well and soon, a children’s cancer charity loaned Lois an adapted bike that allowed her to take her son on gentle rides in the comfort of a cocooned trailer.

Not only did AJ love the trips, and often lapsed into peaceful naps, but Lois felt her worries melt away as she hit the pedals. The daily bike rides became a safe haven - not only a time mother and son safely could share together outside of the hospital walls - but for Lois to regain some calm.

It also helped bolster her weight loss and she reached her target weight in just months, whilst AJ also thankfully made a full recovery. It was a pleasure to learn about Lois physical and emotional weight loss journey, and write about it for best selling monthly magazine, Slimming World.
