Cooking Connections

BBC Good Food Mag

For Julia, cooking is in the blood, with a long family history of professional cooks and businesses. Now, one of the youngest members of her family shares not only the passion and skill, but a big dream…

Julia’s daughter Lexie has always been a dab hand in the kitchen, with her interest igniting as a curious toddler. Whenever Julia was in the kitchen, a little hand would reach up to the counter to see what was going on.

The pair began cooking and baking together, exploring textures, flavours, techniques and generally had a blast at the counter. Julia knew Lexie, who has Down’s Syndrome and autism, would need extra support to aid her development, dexterity, and language, and cooking was the perfect medium to teach, connect and grow.

Now, Lexie has her own website and YouTube channel where she shares accessible cooking and unique recipes. She’s also studying hospitality and the mum and daughter duo dream of one day running their own cafe together.

Read their full story in the current October 2021 issue of BBC Good Food mag, where I have a continuing series of beautiful stories of people who’ve connected over cooking. You can buy it in the shops throughout the month, or download it on PressReader at any time.
