Jeweller butchered my ring
Engagement ring ruined by Hatton Garden Jeweller
That’s Life! magazine
When I needed my morganite engagement ring reset, I went straight to Hatton Garden, and on the recommendation of a trusted friend, used a jeweller there to do the work.
When later, a claw snapped off and my pink morganite gem fell out whilst I was washing my hands, the same jeweller set it back in. But in the process, they scratched the surface of my precious gem. When they tried to fix it, they butchered it even further, leaving my morganite wonky around the ages, too small for the setting, wonky on the top and bottom.
It was then we realised they were not registered with the National Association of Jewellers, so we were on our own to mediate. Let me tell you, it failed. Not only did they not fix the problems they’d caused, they refused to admit they were at fault, or even liable contractually.
We took them to Small Claims Court, and though we didn’t hold out much hope, the judge ruled in our favour, and ordered them to cover the cost of my new ring, court fees and interest.
It was a victory well worth fighting for as now, I have a beautiful cushion cut Brazilian morganite, set in a gorgeous halo of brilliant white diamonds and platinum that will last a lifetime, and one day be my daughter Millie’s family heirloom.
I shared my story with the consumer pages of That’s Life magazine, so readers will always know to check their jeweller is registered with the NAJ, and how to take action if needed through the Small Claims Court.
With special thanks to Carter-Ruck Lawyers who helped us through this process with compassion, expertise and ease.
